PRIVATE CLOUD MEANING

What is Private Cloud?

A private cloud is a cloud computing environment dedicated to a single organization — CPU, RAM, and storage allocated exclusively, dedicated solely to one organisation, never shared with other businesses.

Private cloud computing sits between on-premises servers and public cloud platforms. A private cloud gives a single organization cloud-like provisioning without placing workloads on shared infrastructure. Private cloud is also called an internal cloud or corporate cloud when operated on-site; a hosted or managed private cloud when operated by a service provider. Private cloud environments are dedicated from the hardware layer upward, and data stays on a private network controlled by the organisation.

The distinction between private and public clouds is isolation: a cloud computing environment dedicated to one organisation gives full control over data location, access control, and compliance configuration. Private cloud solutions are right when sovereignty over sensitive data is non-negotiable.

ARCHITECTURE

How Private Cloud Works

How private cloud works starts with underlying physical hardware in a dedicated data center. A hypervisor partitions hardware and software into isolated virtual machines — each with its own OS, CPU, RAM, and storage. Hardware and software resources are managed by the virtualisation layer, defining private cloud architecture: a self service portal provisions computing resources, configures the virtual networking environment, and manages workloads via software defined infrastructure, all within the organisation’s private network.

Private cloud environments run in complete isolation — no other organisation’s workloads share the underlying hardware. PIP handles patching, monitoring, and capacity management as the managed service provider.

INFRASTRUCTURE MODELS

Types of Private Cloud

There are four main types of private cloud. Understanding the types of private cloud helps organisations choose the model that fits their compliance, budget, and IT infrastructure requirements.

ON-PREMISES

On Premises Private Cloud

An on premises private cloud is managed internally in the organization’s data center on the client’s own site. Typically hosted on premises by large enterprises and government agencies, the on premises private cloud requires significant IT infrastructure investment in hardware and an internal IT team — and scaling requires installing additional servers on-site.

Full control · highest cost · internal IT required.

VIRTUAL PRIVATE CLOUD

Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)

A virtual private cloud uses shared public cloud infrastructure with logical isolation — not dedicated hardware. Providers such as Google Cloud offer virtual private cloud configurations within a public cloud data center. A public cloud provider hosts a VPC on multi-tenant infrastructure: the virtual private cloud is dedicated to a single organization logically, not physically — the “private” refers to network-level separation.

Logical isolation only · shared hardware · not a dedicated private cloud.

PIP’s Model HOSTED

Hosted Private Cloud

A hosted private cloud is owned and operated by a third party provider in their data center. The client receives dedicated resources for a single organisation. PIP’s private cloud is this model: hosted private cloud in PIP’s Sydney Datacentre — on-premises maintenance eliminated, Australian data sovereignty retained, full isolation guaranteed.

Dedicated resources · no maintenance burden · Australian-hosted.

MANAGED

Managed Private Cloud

A managed private cloud is single-tenant, operated by a third party provider who handles monitoring, patching, and capacity management on the client’s behalf. PIP offers managed private cloud services: PIP operates and maintains the private cloud environment integrated with the wider IT environment. Suited to organisations wanting private cloud control without IT infrastructure overhead.

Fully managed · flexible location · single-tenant.

INFRASTRUCTURE COMPARISON

Private Cloud vs Public Cloud

Public cloud infrastructure is multi-tenant — workloads share hardware with other organisations. Private cloud infrastructure is single-tenant: resources exclusively for your organisation. That single difference defines data security posture and compliance fit. Public cloud solutions suit elastic workloads with no residency requirements; for healthcare, legal, or financial services, a public cloud provider cannot guarantee Australian data residency by default. Unlike Google Cloud or other hyperscaler platforms, PIP’s private cloud keeps all data on Australian soil. Security and control over sensitive data explain why organisations migrate from public cloud environments to private cloud environments — and public and private cloud infrastructure can coexist in hybrid strategies.

WHY PRIVATE CLOUD

Benefits of a Private Cloud

Private cloud offers greater control over security policies and the compliance assurances that public cloud environments cannot provide.

Enhanced Security & Isolation

Private cloud environments operate in complete isolation — no shared attack surface with other organisations. Enhanced security comes from the single-tenant model: access control is exclusive to your organisation. Private cloud infrastructure reduces risks of data breaches by limiting access to authorised systems only.

Data Sovereignty & Compliance

Sensitive data stays within private cloud environments — location known, controlled, and auditable. With PIP’s hosted model, data privacy obligations for healthcare, legal, and finance are satisfied: data stays on Australian soil. Private cloud environments support compliance that public cloud environments cannot guarantee when data residency is a requirement.

Predictable Performance

Dedicated resources — CPU, RAM, and storage — are guaranteed exclusively to your organisation. Private cloud offers predictable performance without resource sharing: no noisy-neighbour contention from other tenants. Throughput is consistent regardless of what other cloud environments are doing in the data center.

Greater Control

Complete control over the private cloud environment — configuration and security management policies set by the organisation, not a hyperscaler. Greater control over private cloud architecture means customisation for specific compliance requirements that shared public cloud resources do not permit.

Application Modernisation

Private cloud supports application modernisation — moving legacy systems into a managed cloud environment without full dependence on public cloud services. Private cloud offers a controlled, staged path to cloud-native architectures with containerised workloads running in dedicated private infrastructure.

HONEST ASSESSMENT

Challenges of Private Cloud

On premises private cloud has genuine challenges — most apply to the on-premises model and are resolved by a hosted or managed provider.

  • Upfront investment. On premises private cloud requires significant capital for physical infrastructure before workloads run.
  • IT expertise. Private cloud management needs specialist IT infrastructure personnel for virtualisation and patching.
  • Maintenance. OS updates and hardware repairs fall on the client’s IT infrastructure team entirely.
  • Limited scalability. On premises private cloud scalability is capped by purchased hardware — adding compute means installing servers.
  • Operational cost. Private clouds carry higher costs than public cloud when power, cooling, and IT infrastructure staff are included.
  • Integration. Connecting on premises private cloud environments to existing systems requires careful architectural planning.

PIP’S HOSTED MODEL

These challenges apply primarily to on premises private cloud deployments. With PIP’s hosted model, hardware maintenance and IT infrastructure overhead shift to PIP. Organisations in highly regulated industries get private cloud without the private cloud headache.

HYBRID CLOUD

Private Cloud in Hybrid Cloud Strategies

Hybrid cloud strategies combine private cloud infrastructure with public cloud resources — different workloads run in different cloud environments based on compliance and cost. Sensitive data stays in the private cloud; elastic workloads use public cloud resources. Private and public clouds complement each other in hybrid cloud solutions: the private cloud delivers the sovereign core, public cloud resources provide elastic capacity.

Private cloud is critical for hybrid multicloud strategies — it anchors compliance-sensitive workloads. Hybrid cloud environments work best when the private cloud component is well-managed and sovereign. PIP’s private cloud serves as the private cloud foundation in hybrid cloud architecture — Australian-sovereign, fully managed, and integrated with the wider IT environment.

AUDIENCE

Who Uses Private Cloud?

Private cloud is used where data privacy, sovereignty, and compliance are non-negotiable — and where sensitive data cannot reside on a multi-tenant public cloud platform.

HEALTHCARE

Healthcare & Medical

Patient records must stay on Australian soil. Private cloud meets data privacy obligations and clinical data residency requirements for medical practices.

LEGAL

Legal Firms

Client privilege demands controlled infrastructure. Private data — client files and matter documents — stays in a sovereign, access-controlled cloud environment.

FINANCE

Financial Services

Regulatory compliance and data residency obligations make private cloud the standard choice for financial services organisations.

GOVT

Government-Adjacent Organisations

Government agencies handling regulated public sector data face strict sovereignty requirements that only private cloud can satisfy.

SMB

Sydney SMBs with Compliance Requirements

PIP’s private cloud is available to Sydney SMBs. Compliance obligations met with a fully managed private cloud — no internal infrastructure team required.

IT

Businesses Leaving On-Premises Servers

Organisations with ageing on-premises servers move to hosted private cloud: exclusive resources, no hardware maintenance, managed Australian environment.

PIP’S INFRASTRUCTURE

Hosted Private Cloud with PIP

Hosted in PIP’s Sydney Datacentre

PIP’s private cloud is hosted private cloud infrastructure in PIP’s own data center — a purpose-built facility operating since 1995. Private cloud hosting means exclusive resources in a known, controlled Australian data center, subject to Australian law. Cloud providers operating offshore infrastructure cannot offer this guarantee by default — data sovereignty is architectural here, not optional.

Fully Managed Private Cloud

As a cloud service provider, PIP manages the full private cloud infrastructure stack: hardware, virtualisation, OS patching, monitoring, and backups. Clients access private cloud solutions and private cloud services without an internal cloud team. Private cloud storage is available via PIP Drive in the same data center. One cloud service provider for IT and hosting eliminates the blame gap. Cloud providers that combine managed IT with private cloud infrastructure deliver a qualitatively different service to standalone resellers.

Australian Data Sovereignty

Every private cloud service PIP provides operates from PIP’s Sydney data center — in a facility on Australian soil, managed by an Australian cloud service team. Related services: VPS hosting for smaller dedicated workloads; application hosting for PIP-developed applications.

FAQ

Private Cloud FAQ

What is the difference between private cloud and public cloud?

Private cloud computing is single-tenant: exclusive resources on dedicated hardware in a known data center. Public cloud is multi-tenant: shared infrastructure across many customers. Private cloud environments give organisations complete control over data location, access control, and compliance. Cloud computing in a private model means no resource sharing — the defining characteristic that separates it from any shared public cloud infrastructure.

What software is used in private cloud?

Private cloud architecture relies on hypervisor software — VMware, Hyper-V, or KVM/Proxmox — to partition hardware into isolated virtual machines. Computing resources (CPU, RAM, storage) are allocated via software defined infrastructure. PIP manages all private cloud architecture layers. Clients do not maintain cloud software — that is PIP’s responsibility as cloud service provider and managed service provider.

What is a virtual private cloud (VPC)?

A virtual private cloud is a logically isolated environment within a shared public cloud data center. Providers including Google Cloud offer virtual private cloud configurations, but the underlying physical hardware is shared. A true private cloud deployment uses hardware dedicated solely to one organisation, unlike a virtual private cloud where the on premises infrastructure is replaced by a shared hypervisor host. For genuine data sovereignty, use a private cloud in Australia, not a virtual private cloud on a US-based platform.

Can small businesses use private cloud?

Yes. PIP’s private cloud hosting is available to Sydney SMBs. Private cloud deployment does not require managing on premises infrastructure or an enterprise IT team. As a cloud service provider, PIP handles all private cloud computing operations. Many businesses switching to PIP’s private cloud services were running sensitive workloads on public cloud platforms unaware of the data residency exposure.
